Community terms

Effective 6 September 2026.

These terms cover this site and the community features inside the Makit app. Using either means you accept them.

What this is

Makit Community is a directory of public git repositories. Every project page is read out of somebody’s repository — the title, the summary, the licence, the pictures, the parts list, the instructions. We do not host project files, and there is no way to edit a project page here. To change what a page says, change the repository and push.

This website is read-only and has no accounts. Listing a project, posting a build, commenting, rating, bookmarking and reporting all happen in the app.

Listing a project

To list a repository you have to prove you can push to it: the app writes a reference we ask for, and we look for it. Whoever verifies first is the owner. Anybody else who passes the same check becomes a maintainer — they appear on the page and can refresh it or change its visibility, but cannot delete the listing.

If an owner loses push access, whoever has it can ask to take over. We email the current owner and give them seven days to verify again. Who can push decides, because it is the only question git can settle.

What you are responsible for

By listing a repository you tell us you have the right to publish what is in it, and that the licence in it is one you may apply. We check neither. The same goes for anything you post — a build, a photo, a comment.

What we store

  • Which repository you listed, and who verified it.
  • A cached copy of what we read from the repository, so pages load. It can be rebuilt from the repository at any time, and it goes when you delist.
  • What you do on the platform: comments, ratings, builds and their photos, bookmarks.

We never store the project files themselves.

Visibility, and taking a project down

A listing is public, unlisted (only people with the link can see it), or hidden. Hidden is set by us and you cannot undo it. It happens when the repository fails to answer three refreshes in a row, when a report against it is upheld, or when the manifest fails to parse for thirty days. A hidden listing still appears in your own list, with the reason and how to fix it.

Delisting deletes the listing: snapshots, cached pictures and lineage links go with it. Builds other people posted stay — the photos and notes are theirs, and they keep appearing on their own pages, marked as belonging to a project that is gone. Comments and ratings are deleted with the listing, because they mean nothing without it. Listing the same repository again later is a new listing; the old records do not come back.

Reports, and what we can do about them

You can report a listing, a comment or a build for copyright, unsafe design, spam, harassment, or something else. We can do three things: hide a listing, delete a comment, suspend an account. Each one is logged with a reason.

That is the whole list. We cannot take files down, because we do not have them.

Copyright

Write to hello@makit.build and we will hide the listing. Then tell whoever hosts the repository as well — that is where the files are, and only they can remove them.

Suspension, and closing your account

A suspended account has all of its listings hidden. Lifting a suspension does not put them back on its own.

If you close your account, your listings are deleted. Your comments and builds stay, with your name taken off them. Bookmarks and ratings are deleted.

Nothing here has been checked

We do not review projects for safety, and we are not in a position to: these are drawings and parts lists, not products. Some of them involve mains voltage, lithium cells, moving parts and things that get hot. If you build one, you are the manufacturer — read the project, judge it yourself, and take on the risk knowingly.

The community and this site are provided as they are, with no warranty of any kind.

Changes

These terms will change as the platform does. When a change matters to you we will say so on the site rather than quietly swapping the text.
